We kicked off our yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 14, 2023 with an intimate gathering at El Progreso Hall on San Antonio’s Westside, where AVANCE was founded. Guests enjoyed refreshments and mariachi music and were treated to a very special video commemorating AVANCE’s 50th Anniversary featuring families who have participated in AVANCE programs over the past 50 years. The event also recognized the late Jesse Treviño, who created the iconic Mother with Child painting that was gifted to Prince Charles during his visit to AVANCE in 1986.

The unforgettable event included remarks by the AVANCE CEO, Dr. Teresa Granillo, and the AVANCE Board Chair, Dr. Luzelma Canales. The event also honored the founder of AVANCE, Dr. Gloria G. Rodriguez. Former Board Member, Dr. Blandina Cardenas Ramirez introduced Dr. Rodriguez, who shared the history of AVANCE and her experience laying the foundation for AVANCE to become the national leader in two-generation parenting and early childhood education that it is today. San Antonio Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia was also in attendance to present AVANCE with a special proclamation announcing September 14 as AVANCE Day in San Antonio.

Following the event two days later, AVANCE led the annual Avenida Guadalupe Association’s Dieciséis de Septiembre parade with Dr. Rodriguez as the parade’s honorary Grand Marshal.
