Austin Elevates AVANCE’s Trusted Voice in Texas Early Childhood Spaces

Demonstrating What Works to Build Trust Within Latino Communities

In November, AVANCE–Austin was honored to present at the Texas DFPS Partners in Prevention 2025 Conference, where leaders from across the state gathered to explore best practices in supporting children and families. Program Director Zobeida Guerrero and Executive Director Maggie Jaime led a powerful session on bridging communication gaps and building trust with Hispanic and bilingual families—a topic at the heart of AVANCE’s mission.

“When we communicate with cultural awareness and intention, every family feels seen, valued, and understood,” said Guerrero.

Their presentation shared proven strategies drawn from decades of experience, including:

  • Building rapport through culturally responsive communication
  • Creating spaces where bilingual families feel welcomed and empowered
  • Navigating language barriers with empathy and clarity
  • Ensuring families feel truly seen—not just served

The strong response from attendees affirmed what the AVANCE–Austin team has long demonstrated: a deep well of knowledge, cultural insight, and community trust that is often under-recognized on statewide platforms. As the team continues to grow, they are proud to share the expertise they’ve cultivated since 1997.

Elevating Teachers’ Voices

AVANCE–Austin educators are stepping into leadership roles beyond the classroom, sharing their expertise on a broader stage. Erika Gonzales (Parent Educator) and Valeska Lucart (Toy Making Instructor) led a session at the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (TXAEYC) Annual Conference that highlighted AVANCE–Austin’s culturally responsive learning strategies and unique support for bilingual families. By sharing hands-on techniques, engagement tools, and real-life classroom experience, they reinforced that AVANCE educators are more than instructors—they are thought leaders shaping the future of early education.

Leading Local Conversations on Early Childhood Education

Executive Director Maggie Jaime was recently invited to serve on a panel hosted by the Austin Community Foundation, following a community screening of No Small Matter, a documentary on the early childhood crisis.

Drawing from AVANCE–Austin’s decades of on-the-ground experience, she emphasized the importance of culturally responsive early learning, empowering Latino parents, and equitable investment in early childhood systems. Her insights underscored the urgent need for holistic, family-centered solutions in Austin and beyond.
