She picked it up, reading, \u201cDo you want to become a better parent?\u201d It was a flyer for PCEP. Interested, F\u00e1tima called and embarked on her journey with AVANCE.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5334\" width=\"278\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-1-12x12.png 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When F\u00e1tima began PCEP, she was a stay-at-home mom, and her son H\u00e9ctor was only eight months old. She was new to San Antonio, didn\u2019t speak English, and didn\u2019t know many people yet. In PCEP, F\u00e1tima felt a sense of belonging, meeting other mothers as H\u00e9ctor socialized with other children. As much as she enjoyed PCEP, personal obstacles delayed her completion of the program until 2003 when she graduated with H\u00e9ctor and her new child Karla. Through PCEP, F\u00e1tima learned how to guide her children during activities and use every moment as an educational experience. She also developed self-confidence and set personal goals. Having felt limited by language in the past, she started English classes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5335\" width=\"274\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-2.png 300w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-2-12x12.png 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Following PCEP and English classes, F\u00e1tima was hired at AVANCE as a teacher. One by one, F\u00e1tima met her goals, obtaining her CDA credential, child care administrator certification, and Associate\u2019s in Early Childhood and revalidating her foreign Bachelor\u2019s in the Science of Accounting. Driven by her desire to give back to the community, F\u00e1tima has held various positions over her 17-year career with AVANCE. Today, she is the Parent Education Manager for School-Based PCEP at the Fenley Family Center.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5336\" width=\"277\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-3.png 500w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-3-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/www.avance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fatima-espinoza-3-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>F\u00e1tima applied everything she learned to guide H\u00e9ctor and Karla on the path to success. At 23, H\u00e9ctor recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at San Antonio with his Bachelor\u2019s in Biomedical\/Medical Engineering and is now working at a biotech company. Karla is 21 and preparing for her final year at the University of Dallas, where she is pursuing a Bachelor\u2019s in Business with concentrations in Italian and Ethics. Karla also balances her studies with on-campus jobs, resident advisor and sports editor for the student-led newspaper.
