AVANCE Names New CEO

San Antonio, TX – (May 14, 2019) – The Board of Directors of San Antonio-based nonprofit AVANCE Inc. has appointed Dr. Teresa Granillo as the organization’s next CEO. Granillo succeeds Tom Hedrick who joined AVANCE as interim CEO in January 2018.

Granillo was previously Executive Director of Con Mi MADRE, a two-generation organization that supports young Latinas on the path to higher education and engages their mothers in the educational journey alongside them. In her six years as Executive Director, Granillo and her team significantly expanded the impact of Con Mi MADRE, increasing the number of mothers and daughters served, expanding programming to new sites in Austin, and establishing chapters in two additional cities.  Prior to Con Mi MADRE, Granillo was a tenure-track professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Steve Hicks School of Social Work. Granillo has an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona, and dual Ph.D.’s from the University of Michigan.

“Our Board is thrilled that Teresa has agreed to join us,” said Kim Syman, AVANCE Inc. Board Chairwomen. “A strong, dynamic leader, she brings a track record of vision and innovation, entrepreneurial leadership, rigorous practices in evaluation and program design, and a deep sense of caring and connection to the families we serve. We are fortunate to have her join AVANCE and are ready to partner with her to achieve a new level of growth and impact.”

“As a woman who grew up in a low-income single parent household, I know first hand how critical AVANCE’s work is to ending generational poverty and providing the foundation for healthy families with healthy futures,” Granillo said. “Over the past six years working in the area of two-generation education programming, I developed a deep admiration for the work and impact of AVANCE Inc. I could not be more honored and excited to join this incredible team as we work to ensure that more children and families receive AVANCE’s transformational education and support programming.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board and staff, Syman added, “We are also grateful for Tom’s leadership over the last many months as he helped reposition AVANCE to leverage its award-winning two-generation education platforms.”
