Head Start

Head Start is a comprehensive program for children ages three to five years old that designed to help children developmentally, socially, emotionally, and physically, contribute to a child’s readiness for school and beyond. Head Start promotes children’s growth and development in an engaging learning environment through early learning activities as well as a variety of health and family wellbeing services.

Early Head Start

Early Head Start is an early education and family support program for expectant mothers and children ages six weeks to three years old. The Early Head Start program inspires parents to reach their full potential and promotes the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of infants and toddlers through safe and developmentally enriching caregiving.


 

Starr and Zapata Counties

In Starr and Zapata Counties, AVANCE provides center-based Head Start services as well as home-based and center-based options for Early Head Start services. All programs are provided at no cost and are available in English and Spanish.

Head Start

Head Start provides quality preschool education services to children 3–4 years of age for working or school-enrolled parents in a licensed child development facility.

In Hidalgo County, AVANCE provides Early Head Start services through Home-Based and Child Care Partnership program options. All programs are provided at no cost and are available in English and Spanish.

Home-Based Early Head Start

This year-round program serves pregnant women and children birth to three years of age, including those with disabilities.

Services provided:
  • Weekly 90-minute home visits
  • Biweekly 180-minute group socialization

  • Family and child mental Health
  • Linkage to community resources
  • Transportation

Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership

Child care and comprehensive services to children 0-48 months enrolled in licensed family day care in Pharr, San Juan, Alamo and other Hidalgo County areas.

Services include:
  • Child care subsidy
  • Quality home care environment
  • Low child-staff ratios
  • Researched Based Curriculum
  • Health and developmental screenings and assessments
  • Service for children with disabilities
  • Parent-Child Education Program
Eligibility

Families and children are eligible for Early Head Start services if they:

  • Meet the current federal income poverty guidelines
  • Age 0-3 for Home-Based
  • Age 0-4 for Child Care Partnership
  • Meet special eligibility criteria (i.e. they are experiencing homelessness or are in foster care)
